Obtain your free credit report!
Be sure to order credit reports from all three agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion or be sure to get a tri-merge report which is a single report with information merged from all three agencies.
• If you've been denied credit, insurance or employment because of your credit report, you are entitled to receive a free copy of your report from the reporting agency. The company you applied to must supply the credit agency's name, address and telephone number. You have 60 days after receiving the denial notice to request your copy.
• If you haven’t been denied credit you can receive a free credit report by contacting us. Every American consumer is entitled to one credit report a year. This report will not have your credit score. For a credit score you must pay extra.
• For a fee, you can order your credit reports from each of the credit reporting agencies. Costs vary depending on what you are looking for: one credit score, a tri-merge credit report (a report merging all three agencies into one report), or three reports with credit score and a monitoring service. Costs can vary from $10 to $100.
• If you are looking for a home, you can request a credit report from a mortgage professional in your area. Most mortgage professionals provide this as a free service, but be sure to ask first.
Review & Examine Your Reports Line by Line, Letter by Letter
Once you have received all three reports, you must go through these reports line-by-line. Nearly every consumer has an error on at least one credit report from one of the major credit agencies. Credit agencies generate your report on information they receive from your creditors. The reports will have different information because it's a voluntary reporting system, and creditors subscribe to whichever agency they want -- if any at all.
